Peacemaker is canon to James Gunn’s DCU. So is Amanda Waller, Rick Flag, and presumably, earlier than too lengthy, Polka-Dot Man. However what concerning the film that introduced all of them collectively, and gave Gunn his first DC directorial credit score? Is The Suicide Squad totally canon to the DCU, regardless of additionally being canon to DCEU films Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey? It’s laborious to think about that, for instance, DC needs Jared Leto again. Now we have now a solution straight from Gunn: Sure, the film is canon to the DCU. However with a little bit of an asterisk, or high quality print, should you desire.
On Spotify’s “The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon?” official podcast, Gunn made the declare. “I feel that we will just about say the complete film is canon. I don’t assume there’s an issue.” He acknowledges there could also be some minor timeline points that don’t concern him an excessive amount of, like when it occurs relative to Superman. Nevertheless, it’s nonetheless a greater match than Peacemaker Season 1, which was retconned originally of Season 2 to have occurred in another way on this explicit nook of the multiverse. There’s only one large query…
Harley Quinn Could Trigger a Continuity Subject within the DCU
At this level, Gunn isn’t positive if Margot Robbie needs to proceed enjoying Harley Quinn, and he or she isn’t contractually obliged to. There’s additionally no Joker but established on this DCU, as Gunn says, she “talks about her previous boyfriend. That could possibly be the Joker or it could possibly be anyone else.” Nevertheless, if it’s anyone else, that modifications up her origin story in essential methods. “For me, there are particular issues that appear extremely essential to sure characters, you already know, now, what I see as essential to characters. Perhaps anyone else doesn’t.” Most would agree, nonetheless, that Joker creating the Harley we all know is the definitive origin. To this point, solely Batman: Caped Crusader has disagreed. However given the best way Peacemaker retconned sure callback scenes, there’s a precedent set to reshoot Harley flashback moments with a distinct Mr. J.
Some followers might nitpick the notion of Superman by no means having misplaced a struggle previous to the Hammer of Boravia, so far as Bloodsport’s Kryptonite bullet backstory is anxious. For Gunn, that’s not a problem — he doesn’t assume that being shot essentially counts as shedding a struggle. “I don’t essentially assume that flying round nonchalantly, maybe taking your flying canine for a stroll or no matter he was doing, and being taken down with a Kryptonite bullet and going to the hospital is battle,” he stated. “It’s not even essentially defeat. He simply was shot.” Does the timing add up? “The film got here out in 2021. That may have been earlier than Superman was on the scene as a result of we all know originally of the film, Superman has solely been on the scene for 3 years…So we must push up when The Suicide Squad occurred to, you already know, ‘23 or ‘24.” That doesn’t trouble him, even when some might need points. “We’re going to make errors,” he acknowledges.
As for different characters coming into the DCU, Gunn has an affection for TDK – The Removable Child, performed by Nathan Fillion. Whereas he doesn’t essentially have an issue with actors enjoying a couple of position — Michael Rooker has already performed two — Fillion is completely established as Man Gardner, the Inexperienced Lantern of our sector. If TDK does return, he’ll “most likely not” be Fillion. Gunn’s not a giant fan of Mongal, whom he known as, “not my most suitable option for a personality.” Weasel, in fact, already returned in Creature Commandos, and King Shark is probably going set for the second season of that sequence. Gunn additionally clearly loves Ratcatcher II — given the whole lot else, she looks like a contender for recanonization as properly.
