Some early viewers of Different Mommy had been throughout social media, claiming there was a leap scare each jiffy. Such a tall declare had yours actually nervous too earlier than the movie started, and that is somebody who loves the style. I’m nonetheless ready for these leap scares as I write this.
Jessica Chastain’s Different Mommy revolves round a younger woman, Bela (Arabella Olivia Clark), who encounters a supernatural entity that takes the type of her mom. The entity needs the woman to say sure to letting her into her coronary heart, in order that it might enter the bodily realm.
Nothing scary on this horror
There may be virtually nothing scary right here, for starters. Primarily based on the 2024 novel Incidents Across the Home and produced by James Wan, Different Mommy comes with excessive expectations. Wan, in spite of everything, has been behind The Conjuring universe, whose first instalment stays among the many finest horror movies ever made.
Different Mommy, nevertheless, fails to ship on nearly each entrance. The storytelling is abrupt, the development rushed, and barring some cool visible results, there’s valuable little to unsettle horror veterans. For a movie that has been hyped for its leap scares, it’s surprisingly brief on scares of any sort.
The core idea is intriguing: the supernatural is drawn to kids due to their innocence, and the one method to finish it’s for them to lose that very innocence. It’s a premise with loads of potential, however the movie does little to develop it meaningfully or give the viewers a compelling purpose to remain invested.
Fleeting moments cannot salvage movie
It’s the climax that lastly piques your curiosity and retains you hooked. However these are fleeting moments in an in any other case underwhelming movie, they usually do little to salvage an in any other case unsatisfactory viewing expertise.
Jessica Chastain does nicely in her position, however Jay Duplass, who performs her husband, and Arabella, who performs their daughter, are each so performative that their acts lack any semblance of authenticity. All of it feels too filmi, for lack of a greater phrase.
General, Different Mommy finally ends up being a slightly irritating watch, extra for what it may have been than what it really is. The concept is unsettling sufficient, however the execution hardly ever conjures up worry. Horror followers searching for a real scare can be higher off revisiting The Conjuring.
