Spoilers for the HBO sequence Lanterns observe.
Following the season finale of DCU’s Lanterns, followers are hungry for extra. This season defined Man Gardner’s function as Inexperienced Lantern, the destiny of Hal Jordan, and launched famed Inexperienced Lantern villain Sinestro. The finale arrange John Stewart as a boots-on-the-ground Inexperienced Lantern, devoted to the Corps’ wider mission however not obedient to the Guardians, and it gave him a brand new energy battery. The brand new energy battery got here from Sinestro of all individuals, but it surely units Stewart up for future adventures, together with his confirmed look in Superman: Man of Tomorrow and future seasons of Lanterns.
Audiences are already speculating what future seasons of Lanterns will entail and what storylines they’d wish to see tailored. The deal with Manhunters — albeit in a distinct kind than comedian audiences are used to seeing them — and the present’s deal with autonomy could be a straightforward match for a storyline concerning Alpha Lanterns.
Alpha Lanterns have been Inexperienced Lanterns become Manhunters by the Guardians. As soon as once more, the Guardians wished to attain a peacekeeping power with minimal kickback from these serving in it. Whereas the season finale left the door open on the Manhunters — John Stewart didn’t take motion towards Noah Macon, the Manhunter son of Sheriff Kane — it appears unlikely that the writers would stick with them for one more season with out exploring different foes of the Inexperienced Lanterns.
The identical writer who got here up with the Alpha Lanterns additionally wrote two main DC Comics occasions, The Sinestro Corps Struggle and Blackest Evening. Written by prolific DC Comics author Geoff Johns, these tales, if completed effectively, could be wonderful for the DCU. Followers wish to see each of them, and given the breadth of those tales, they might simply embody characters from exterior Lanterns’ small forged.
Setting Up the Sinestro Corps Struggle
With the mysterious alien planet and the inclusion of Sinestro, Lanterns season one already planted a number of seeds for a Sinestro Corps Struggle arc. In Inexperienced Lantern, yellow has at all times been a weak point for the Inexperienced Lantern Corps, and Geoff Johns’ Sinestro Corps Struggle solidified the weak point not solely to the colour however to the grander emotion of concern.
The Sinestro Corps, in the course of the Sinestro Corps Struggle, aimed to create a common order via “absolute obedience and abject terror”. Sinestro not solely meant to destroy Hal Jordan and the Inexperienced Lantern Corps throughout this arc but in addition deliberate to rule the multiverse. Whereas a multiversal scope could be unlikely, Lanterns season two may simply observe a Sinestro increase his personal Lantern Corps.
On the season’s finish, Sinestro was nonetheless vulnerable to the concern of the alien planet, however he has loads of time going ahead to learn to embrace that concern. As soon as that concern is embraced, he would be capable of channel it and recruit others to his trigger. Hal Jordan could also be his focus within the comics, however the Lanterns tv present gave Sinestro an animosity in the direction of Stewart that may actually be adopted up on if the writers don’t plan on resurrecting Jordan.
The comedian depends on a bigger Inexperienced Lantern forged, so it will be attention-grabbing to see what characters Lanterns would introduce for a storyline, and the way it will possible be scaled down for a season of tv.
Blackest Evening could be an Glorious Film Occasion
If completed proper, Blackest Evening has the potential to be a DCU film occasion on par with Avengers: Infinity Struggle and Avengers: Endgame. It has a big forged, a severe menace, and appreciable fallout. Teases for the storyline have been already made with Lanterns season one, however it will be finest if it have been constructed out progressively as a substitute of making an attempt to hurry it for Lanterns season two and even season three.
In Lanterns season one, Sinestro teases the Halogram with the prospect of bringing Hal again to life for actual. This might be both as a number for Parallax — a parasite that’s the literal entity of concern within the DC Universe and thus part of the Sinestro Corps — or by way of a black ring. Constructing on Geoff Johns’ colour spectrum mythos for Inexperienced Lantern, black lanterns signify dying and the void that existed earlier than all life. In contrast to the opposite Lantern Corps, Black Lanterns aren’t composed of the dwelling, however quite the useless.
The Blackest Evening comedian derives a lot of its stakes from the current deaths of serious Justice League members reminiscent of Aquaman, Batman, and Martian Manhunter. Batman and Aquaman are later introduced again as Black Lanterns, and the surviving members of the League understand that whereas they resemble their family members, they aren’t them. Black Lantern rings are later described as “carrying the useless” versus the “useless carrying the rings”.
Due to the big forged, Blackest Evening shouldn’t be tailored till a Justice League has been established and audiences have had time to care about these characters. Batman’s dying gained’t imply something until Batman, as a personality throughout the story, has meant one thing. Lanterns launched audiences to Sinestro, Hal Jordan, and John Stewart, together with additional characterizing Man Gardner, however there’s a plethora of characters working in Blackest Evening that audiences don’t know but, and that may be overwhelming to satisfy in the beginning of a Blackest Evening adaptation.
