In 2025, DC Studios was about to start manufacturing on a interval battle movie, however cancelled the shoot on the final minute. A 12 months later, we’re lastly getting particulars on what that movie might have been. Comedian guide motion pictures have more and more grow to be frameworks for making motion pictures in different genres. When Gunn launched his “Gods & Monsters” slate, James Gunn was clear he needed to make style motion pictures that simply occurred to have superheroes. The filmmaker stated, “You want to inform tales that don’t simply fake to be completely different genres, however really are completely different genres.” The Suicide Squad was a mission movie modeled on motion pictures like The Soiled Dozen and The Nice Escape. HBO’s Lanterns is a detective story with extraterrestrial origins. The upcoming Clayface is the DCU’s first R-rated horror movie. One of many first movies added to the lineup after the preliminary slate announcement was a extra conventional battle movie starring one in every of DC’s longest-running heroes. The movie was being helmed by a critically beloved director, whose work didn’t essentially make him the prime candidate for a comic book guide film. Simply as cameras had been set to roll on the shoot, the film was delivered to a halt. Making the character’s 66-year mission to the display screen a failure. Now the filmmaker behind that try is opening up about what his battle movie would have appeared like.
Luca Guadagnino was set to direct Sgt. Rock off a script written by screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes. Colin Farrell was connected because the titular Sergeant of Simple Firm, and the director had begun searching for troopers to fill his platoon. A type of troopers was anticipated to be Mike Faist, the star of Guadagnino’s Challengers with Zendaya. In a current profile on GQ, when requested about Sgt. Rock, Faist would solely say he and Guadagnino “stay speaking about issues every so often.” When requested for follow-up, Kuritzkes added, “we had been kind of in prep,” earlier than giving extra particulars concerning the film.
The movie would have had a special tone than most comedian guide motion pictures, calling the trouble “fairly experimental.” Contemplating Guadagnino’s earlier efforts included Name Me By Your Identify and collaborations with Kuritzkes on the movies Challengers and Queer, that concept tracks. For his half, the author says he was “so excited for that film.” He added, “Not one of the individuals who had been planning on doing it had been individuals who had been significantly keen on making large superhero motion pictures.… Sgt. Rock was very a lot a superhero film that was about on a regular basis heroes, people, regular individuals, the place the superheroes had been actually not the main focus in any respect. So it was a reasonably experimental factor.”
Between a Rock and a Laborious Place
Sgt. Rock made his comedian debut in 1959’s Our Military at Battle #81, created by artist Joe Kubert and author Robert Kanigher. Sgt. Frank Rock was a WWII infantry sergeant with no superpowers, commanding Simple Firm, a fictional unit sharing the title of the very actual E Firm of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment depicted in HBO’s Band of Brothers. Hollywood’s urge for food for battle movies has put Sgt. Rock within the highlight for adaptation earlier than. Within the late ’80s, Arnold Schwarzenegger was connected to a Sgt. Rock movie, with a script from Die Laborious and Commando author Steven E. de Souza. The studio even went as far as to distribute promotional pins at San Diego Comedian-Con that includes a rendering of the actor with a title remedy.
Because the many years glided by, extra filmmakers would try a tackle the fabric. There have been scripts from screenwriting stalwarts like David Webb Peoples, who wrote Unforgiven and co-wrote Blade Runner and 12 Monkeys; Apocalypse Now and Pink Daybreak author John Milius; and Brian Helgeland, who gained a Finest Tailored Screenplay Oscar for L.A. Confidential and directed A Knight’s Story. Administrators additionally got here and went. Man Ritchie was connected to the challenge in 2008. Then The Starvation Video games: Catching Hearth director Francis Lawrence tried to develop a model that might have the DC character combating a battle sooner or later. That model stalled, and Sgt. Rock went on the again burner once more. The truth that a Sgt. Rock film bought so near manufacturing in 2025 nearly looks as if a large feat.
James Gunn has stated he nonetheless desires to see Sgt. Rock on display screen, although Kuritzkes has pointed the finger in his path for what occurred to their movie. When requested concerning the film’s cancellation, he stated, “You may ask DC Studios.” It’s attainable the movie simply didn’t line up with Gunn’s plans for the DCU. Sgt. Rock did make it to screens in 2019 as an animated brief within the straight-to-DVD DC Showcase: Sgt. Rock (included with Batman: Hush), the place he was voiced by The Boys’ Karl City. The brief really had the soldier main the Creature Commandos towards Nazi zombies. He would additionally briefly seem within the DCU’s first cartoon sequence, Creature Commandos, combating alongside G.I. Robotic in flashbacks to his time in WWII. In 2022, one other actor gave Gunn much more ammo to adapt the Allied soldier into the DCU. Evil Useless star Bruce Campbell wrote a six-issue miniseries, Sgt. Rock vs. The Military of the Useless, by which Simple Firm has to battle Nazi zombies in 1944. With Creature Commandos and Peacemaker setting the tone for Nazi killing, possibly it’s time for Daybreak of the Useless author Gunn to interrupt out his typewriter and do what he does greatest: replace Sgt. Rock himself. Till then, the one zombie round right here is that this franchise.
