Whereas Bourdain invented Get Jiro’s absurd world the place restaurant workers beat one another to dying with kitchen utensils, lots of the Grownup Swim sequence’ greatest components aren’t from the comics in any respect. Tanaka and Gatewood made this decadent model of Los Angeles really feel alive by including household eating places simply making an attempt to get by, a disciplined well being inspector on the lookout for justice, and an overeager younger apprentice for Jiro. They pack authentic humor into scenes involving hungry beat cops, corrupt politicians, and annoyed traders.
