The Absolute Universe is DC’s largest success in a long time, and it’s straightforward to see why. In contrast to the corporate’s regular comics, that are knee-deep in what is commonly a really messy continuity that turns off followers new and previous, the Absolute Universe is a brand new story that may be learn with none prior data of how DC’s comics work. It’s the final word entry level for brand new followers to hop on, taking all the teachings discovered from a long time of crafting iconic characters and distilling them into contemporary, impactful new takes. After all, the primary issues everybody notices concerning the Absolute Universe are its aesthetic and route.
In contrast to the normal DC Earth, this new world has heroes on the again foot, but it surely goes deeper than that. The world is totally different, darker, however the heroes are the identical at their core. The Absolute Universe is constructed across the singular concept of stripping away all the pieces however the barest necessities from our heroes, leaving them with solely their core concept, and throwing them into the world to observe them save the day because the underdogs. To that finish, each hero misplaced one thing. Batman misplaced his fortune, Superman misplaced the Kents, and the Flash misplaced the Pace Power. It was a daring, real change that gave this universe its life. Nevertheless, as of Absolute Flash #19, the Pace Power is right here, and that leaves me questioning how a lot this universe has really delivered on its guarantees.
What Was Misplaced Is Slowly Being Discovered
Each hero was boiled right down to their naked necessities, and, for the Flash, that meant eradicating his household and understanding of his powers. The solicit for the primary concern pitched this comedian because the Flash being with out his mentor, household, or the Pace Power. In lots of regards, it delivered, eradicating the thought of the Flash Household and killing Barry Allen, leaving Wally on his personal with none assist. Nevertheless, the Pace Power itself is current and, presumably, has been this whole time. Concern #19 noticed Wally pushed to the brink of loss of life, and in that second, his thoughts expanded and he noticed previous the darkness on the coronary heart of the universe to see a shiny gentle, an power, that he practically named the Pace Power, earlier than Zolomon knocked him out of it.
The Pace Power is as soon as once more right here and certain the supply of Flash’s powers, however he isn’t the one one who’s recovering what this universe promised to remove. Batman misplaced Alfred, however he has him again as a army mentor as a substitute of a butler. It was revealed that Superman did land within the Kent farm, however shortly misplaced them to Lazarus Corp. Jo’s Lantern powers are saved in her ring, and he or she’s assembling a Corps product of her associates and allies. Surprise Girl wasn’t raised on Paradise Island, however the Amazons are current within the story, ready to be discovered. It looks as if it’s inevitable that the heroes reclaim what the Absolute Universe has taken from them, however that raises the query: does this go towards what the Absolute Universe got down to do? It might look like it, however I don’t suppose so.
The Function Is Revision, Not Elimination
When taking these thought-to-be important elements away from the heroes, the purpose wasn’t to alter them for the sake of being totally different. The concept was to interrupt these heroes right down to their barest necessities, highlighting precisely what it was that makes them tick and, in flip, such inspirations. Batman remains to be a person who battles injustice in a system that appears too corrupt to ever change. Superman remains to be an alien farmboy gifted the ability to destroy the world, however as a substitute makes use of it to save lots of his adopted planet. These heroes are nonetheless the identical characters, which is what makes these revisions work so properly. The purpose was to emphasise the precise factor that makes them nice.
With or with out the Pace Power, Wally remains to be a younger man striving to search out his place on the planet, simply as he was when he first turned the Flash in the primary DC Universe. Sure, I might have most well-liked for the Pace Power to not be launched, or no less than not so shortly, however the true power of the Absolute Universe has by no means been what they took away, however what they did with what they left the heroes. Batman nonetheless has Alfred, however their dynamic has been completely modified, with Alfred studying to consider on the planet once more because of Batman, as a substitute of him being the Darkish Knight’s grounding pressure. As an alternative of the individuals who raised him, the Kents had been Superman’s proof that there’s good inside Earth’s folks.
The heroes are the identical characters, however their new conditions and aesthetics make them really feel new, and their portrayals are a real breath of contemporary air. Perhaps among the heroes are recovering what Darkseid stole from them, but it surely’s not like they’re the identical as they had been earlier than. All the pieces is simply totally different sufficient on this universe to justify their existence. I’m certain that the Pace Power will observe the identical route, as Flash’s powers appear to be tied way more carefully to time than they’re in the primary world. The Absolute Universe is doing precisely what it got down to do, and although it may not appear to be it on a regular basis, as long as these heroes maintain using that line of familiarity and newness, the Absolute Universe is fulfilling its promise.
