The Legion of Tremendous-Heroes is certainly one of DC’s most essential groups. They’re a gaggle of younger, plucky superheroes from the thirty first Century who’re impressed by the actions of Clark Kent when he was Superboy, and attempt to emmulate him. Simply as he introduced peace and understanding to Earth regardless of being an alien, they needed to make use of their innate skills to do the identical to the United Planets, making it a secure, simply place for folks of all species. Greater than being a terrific instance of Superman’s influence, they’re an emblem of how heroism survives lengthy into the long run. The Legion reside proof that the higher tomorrow everybody fights for truly exists, and that’s genuinely inspiring.
Regardless of that, the Legion itself has been present process fixed turmoil and restarts for years. Frankly, it by no means knew easy methods to progress after Disaster on Infinite Earths. What was as soon as certainly one of DC’s largest groups fell into obscurity, however fortunately, the lengthy drought would possibly lastly be over. There’s a brand-new collection with a brand-new Legion of Tremendous-Heroes on the town, and it reinvents the staff whereas staying true to the whole lot that made them so nice within the first place. Legion of Tremendous-Heroes (2026) #1 takes us proper into the times main as much as the Legion’s formation, giving us a take a look at so lots of our younger heroes with out as soon as seeming over-bloated. It’s a real deal with for each Legion fan, new and outdated.

The Begin of One thing New and Acquainted
The problem is all about establishing the people who will in the future change into the Legion of Tremendous-Heroes. It kicks the whole lot off with a terrific encapsulation of what Superboy means to the historical past of heroism, after which throws us into the seedy, complicated world of the United Planets. This concern centered on 5 characters who we all know as basic Legionaires, although they’re right here in methods we’ve by no means seen earlier than. Brainiac 5 is now Braniac 1 of 5, and he works alongside Matter-Eater Lad, his bodyguard, as non-public eyes investigating the latest dying of the wealthiest man within the universe, R.J. Brande. We additionally meet Lightning Lad enjoying at being a superhero, Saturn Woman as an remoted princess, and Cosmic Boy giving up the prospect of a lifetime.
This comedian covers a number of floor with a number of characters, and those taking middle stage are undoubtedly the mystery-solving duo and Lightning Lad, however everybody will get their highlight with out feeling overbloated or overshadowed. The problem has very robust thematic and plot-relevant threads that tie each part collectively, clearly all constructing an image of a grander world and forged which can be going to attach fantastically. Probably the most attention-grabbing a part of this homicide thriller is that the Legion we all know these characters will type isn’t the primary. There was one other Legion earlier than them, and its impacts are straight destroying the whole lot the long run one will come to face for.
This can be a genuinely nice entry level for this new Legion. It’s open to followers new and outdated, offering a seamless jumping-on level for individuals who haven’t learn a Legion ebook earlier than, and so many particulars for longtime followers to chew on. The one grievance I’ve with this concern is that the dialogue sometimes feels much more geared in the direction of the viewers than the characters. Brainiac 1 of 5 and Matter-Eater Lad explaining that the United Planets is on the breaking point as they did, for example, didn’t sound pure in any respect. These are solely minor complaints, nonetheless, however they simply maintain this concern again from perfection.
An Endlessly Charming New Starting
Hayden Sherman is the artist on name for the daybreak of this Legion, and I couldn’t consider a greater artist for the story being instructed. Their fashion is the proper mixture of stylized, extremely detailed, fluid, and endlessly charming that captures the youthful, hopeful vitality of the Legion of Tremendous-Heroes of their beginning days. Studying this comedian appears like watching a cartoon, combining full of life motion and explosive motion with delicate, intricate particulars the place it counts, particularly within the background. As an illustration, the whole lot about Lightning Lad screams who he’s, however top-of-the-line little particulars is the Absolute Marvel Girl #300 on his flooring, which harkens each to Sherman’s different best-known title and Lightning Lad’s love for superheroes.
In fact, no nice artist is full with out an superior colorist, and Sherman and Tamra Bonvillain are a match made in heaven. Each character and look at of nature is so vibrant, whereas each shot of the hard-boiled, cynical cities evokes all of the trepidation they need to. Bonvillain’s colours convey out all of the life and care in every of Sherman’s panels, elevating them from nice to a number of the finest work both has performed in latest reminiscence. The lightning results, Brainiac’s pores and skin, the tapestry of the cosmos, all of these items are coloured so fantastically it’s insane to me. Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou deserves a particular shout-out because the letterer for the Saturn Woman sections, that are simply the correct quantity of understandable.
Total, I fell in love with this ebook, and I can not wait to tug the remainder of the collection because it dives into what makes the Legion tick, and the way they create hope again to a universe that has forgotten it. I can not suggest this collection sufficient.
