Lanterns has addressed the expansive roster of the Inexperienced Lantern Corps on a number of events, however up to now, the one Inexperienced Lanterns we’ve really met are Hal Jordan, John Stewart, and Man Gardner. Followers doubtless have prolonged lists of Lanterns they’d wish to see within the DCU, however the present simply gave elements of 1 Inexperienced Lantern’s origin story to John Stewart, so the query turns into: will they ever present up within the DCU?
Spoilers incoming for Lanterns episode 3, so for those who haven’t seen the episode but, you’ve been warned. In episode 3, we be taught fairly a bit about John Stewart’s time earlier than turning into a Inexperienced Lantern trainee, and one sudden element is that he attended artwork faculty and have become a gifted artist. We see this in motion throughout considered one of his assessments to change into a Inexperienced Lantern and previous to his assembly with a Guardian, and when mixed with the present’s concentrate on John and Hal’s battle over one particular ring, you may’t assist however discover that the present appears to be making Kyle Rayner’s origins and key parts a part of John’s story as an alternative.
Lanterns Has Mixed Story Components From Each John and Kyle
Trying on the first three episodes, it feels as if Lanterns took parts of each John Stewart and Kyle Rayner and mixed them, and whereas that’s not a foul factor, it’s fairly noticeable the extra we uncover about Stewart’s backstory. Within the comics, Stewart’s time as a Marine is highlighted fairly a bit, as is his expertise as an architect, which is why his constructs are a lot extra detailed and fleshed out versus others.
Right here we see that very same method to his constructs when he has to attract the constructing from reminiscence after which recreate his father’s watch as a assemble, however earlier within the episode, it’s solely talked about that he’s going to artwork faculty. That’s a major change from the comics, as one of many differentiating components between Kyle and the remainder of the Lanterns is his immense creativity, which stems from him being an artist. Whereas the present may nonetheless lean into John being an architect, bringing the artist facet into John’s story removes one of many distinctive parts of Kyle’s method to being a Lantern if he ever does seem sooner or later. He can nonetheless be wonderful, however that facet shall be rather less particular.
The final method to Earth’s Inexperienced Lanterns additionally has ties to Kyle. The present is constructed round John and Hal’s battle over the ring, with Hal not wanting to provide it up and John ready for the second when he can take it as his personal.
With there being one Lantern energetic in the intervening time in Hal, there are some clear parts pulled from Kyle’s beginnings as a Inexperienced Lantern. When you’re not acquainted with Kyle’s origin story, Kyle is given the ring by the final remaining Guardian, Ganthet, after Hal Jordan goes over the sting and takes down the opposite Lanterns and collects their rings. We now know this was the affect of Parallax due to Rebirth, however that wasn’t the case on the time.
When Kyle is chosen to be the final Inexperienced Lantern, Jordan, as Parallax, comes calling to take the ring, which is definitely revealed to be his outdated ring. He desires it again to change into a Inexperienced Lantern once more, and sarcastically, Ganthet was additionally there attempting to take it again. This resulted in an influence battle between Kyle, Hal, and the Guardians, and if that sounds acquainted, you then’ve additionally been watching Lanterns.
The battle over one ring, a background in artwork, and a normal mistrust and fragmented relationship with each the Guardians and the Corps are all a part of Kyle’s origin story, and now they’re being woven into Stewart’s. Once more, it doesn’t imply we received’t see Kyle in some unspecified time in the future, however seeing these parts pop up in one other character’s story would possibly imply we don’t see Kyle make his DCU debut till additional down the road. You by no means know with the DCU although, so fingers crossed he pops up sooner fairly than later.
Lanterns episodes 1 by means of 3 are streaming now on HBO Max.
