The College of Glasgow graduate performed a pivotal position within the growth of the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on the telescope, which permits it to view exoplanets, amongst different issues.
Named after the sixteenth‑century Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe, a pioneer of precision astronomical measurements, the medal is one in all Europe’s highest honours in observational astrophysics.

Professor Wright mentioned: “It’s a super honour to have my contributions recognised by the award of the Tycho Brahe Medal. In my profession I’ve benefitted enormously from working internationally with improbable collaborators within the MIRI staff, in addition to domestically with the superb employees on the UK ATC. I’m thrilled with the scientific success of JWST and that collectively we’re advancing our understanding of the Universe by means of modern instrumentation.”
A graduate of the College of Glasgow, Professor Wright went on to finish her PhD at Imperial School London, specialising in infrared research of interacting galaxies. She later served as employees scientist after which Head of Instrumentation at the UK InfraRed Telescope (UKIRT) in Hawaii earlier than returning to the UK in 1997 to hitch the newly based UK ATC. In her position as Director, from 2012 to 2024, she helped place UK ATC as a world chief in astronomical instrumentation.
Her achievements have beforehand been recognised with a CBE, election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and because the first UK recipient of the Royal Astronomical Society’s Caroline Herschel Medal.
