For greater than three a long time, Pokemon and its numerous card and video video games have loved sustained recognition world wide. And at the very least one outstanding collector and investor–Griffin Gaming Companions co-founder Peter Levin–believes that Pokemon’s enduring attraction not solely extends to the current, it might proceed even when the world instantly got here to an finish.
“Pokemon is a worldwide phenomenon,” Levin advised The Hollywood Reporter. “I am completely satisfied that if the world suffered an apocalypse tomorrow, the next day the worldwide forex could be Pokemon playing cards. Pokemon playing cards are beating the S&P 500 by 3,000%. Emanating from Japan, it actually took maintain world wide within the late ’90s and early 2000s. It then had a zenith second after which a nadir second, and ever since then, it has been on a parabolic progress curve.”
As unlikely as that state of affairs may appear, there might be a really entertaining film primarily based on survivors utilizing Pokemon playing cards as forex throughout an apocalypse. It could be in all probability even higher with precise Pokemon–like the Detective Pikachu movie–but Levin’s actually hit on enjoyable thought even when it does not have a foundation in actuality.
Every part Levin mentioned about Pokemon’s recognition is right. There is a cause why the Japanese mob reportedly used uncommon Pokemon playing cards to launder cash or for more and more brazen robberies of Pokemon playing cards from shops throughout the US. Some individuals are keen to pay ridiculous quantities of cash for the rarest Pokemon playing cards and collectibles.
Nonetheless, that worth can solely maintain if the playing cards have some intrinsic worth exterior of Pokemon followers. They’re solely helpful so long as somebody places actual forex towards them. With out that community of devoted consumers, Pokemon playing cards would not be well worth the paper they’re printed on when the world goes to hell.
Earlier than any potential apocalypse comes alongside, Pokemon is getting a brand new stop-motion animated collection on Disney+. The September 2026 occasions for Pokemon Go had been additionally lately introduced. Earlier this summer time, Pokemon Pokopia obtained a DLC replace as effectively.
