David Malukas blamed a Chevrolet engine concern for costing him his maiden IndyCar victory at The Milwaukee Mile after a hesitation on a late restart handed the win to Arrow McLaren’s Pato O’Ward.
Driving the #12 Workforce Penske Chevrolet, the 24-year-old Chicago native began third within the resumed Race 1 following a fourth-place end in Race 2. An off-strategy pit name put Malukas into the lead on lap 120, and he went on to steer 93 laps. Nevertheless, on a restart with 19 laps remaining, Malukas’ automobile hesitated, permitting O’Ward to dive beneath him into Flip 1 and drive off to safe the victory.
Malukas completed second, 1.7535 seconds behind.
The end result marked Malukas’s fourth second-place end of the season and the sixth of his profession, placing him in a tie with a number of drivers – together with Romain Grosjean – for the second-most runner-up finishes with no win. Malukas blamed Chevrolet when chatting with IndyCar Radio after the race.
