DC Comics is cooking and Darkseid has been one of many key components. There’s a sure joke going across the DC fan group proper now: Darkseid is the best author in comedian historical past due to how nice his Absolute Universe has been. DC has been creaming Marvel in gross sales for the previous few years and the God of Evil has been a catalyst for a number of the greatest components of the corporate. He’s the massive dangerous of what’s being referred to as the “DC All-In Saga”, performing as the principle villain of 2025’s DC Ok.O. Whereas the heroes had been capable of defeat him in that story, you possibly can’t preserve a foul god down, and DC All-In Saga: Darkseid vs. The World #1 brings him again. It additionally does one thing else that’s going to trigger the Darkseid fandom to lose their minds.
Jack Kirby created Darkseid when he got here again to DC Comics in 1970, creating him as the middle of the New Gods saga. Kirby cherished mythology – simply have a look at his work on Thor – and he used the New Gods to create his personal cosmology for the DC Multiverse. One factor that has at all times been somewhat essential to mythology is prophecy. Prophecies have at all times performed an enormous function within the legends of humanity and Kirby made one the core of the New Gods – that Darkseid would fall in battle together with his best enemy, his son Orion. Nonetheless, DC All-In Saga: Darkseid vs. The World #1 adjustments all of that, which is certainly going to trigger an uproar.
Darkseid Has Discovered a New Reverse Quantity and It Goes In opposition to Every thing We Knew
Kirby understood that the entire level of mythology was to permit humanity to make sense of a universe that always makes zero sense. Mythological characters are representations of assorted issues, from parts to ideas. Darkseid is the God of Evil, giving him a spot on the high of the cosmology. He’s the chief evil god and in all delusion, there’s at all times a prophecy concerning the chief evil god’s loss. In Darkseid’s case, Kirby went in an Abrahamic course, making the son of god (of evil) the one who defeats the “satan”.
Kirby meant for Orion to be Darkseid’s reverse. The complete level of Orion – and actually the story of the New Gods – is that even those that had been born evil don’t must be that means, that evil is as a lot nurture as it’s something. Orion is the son of essentially the most foul being within the multiverse, evil is in his very genes. He fights towards the evil nature that is part of him because the son of evil. Orion’s battle towards Darkseid is, in a number of methods, the battle that each human fights with the darkness within himself. Kirby might sound on the nostril, however he’s extra refined than you notice.
Orion as the other variety of Darkseid is the purpose of the New Gods, which is why DC All-In Saga: Darkseid vs. The World #1 goes to anger the purists. This concern sees Darkseid assault Earth-3, whereas ruminating on his present mission. He’s been working behind the scenes, conquering different Earths in an effort to take their Omega power for his personal. He has a brand new obsession now – as an alternative of eager to get his fingers on the Anti-Life Equation, he desires to create the Omega Singularity, smushing collectively all time and house, in order that all the pieces and everybody exists all in the identical second.
Whereas this can be a change that may definitely make the Kirby purists, it’s not one which undoes something main, as a result of the difficulty tells us that the Omega Singularity is principally the final word evolution of the facility of the Equation. Nonetheless, as Darkseid battles Ultraman, he begins to consider Superman, a hero that he has been battling much more, and he makes a press release that’s going to shock longtime followers – that Superman is his reverse quantity and his best enemy.
This can be a enormous change to the character and it’s one which has been within the making for a very long time. Darkseid has grow to be DC’s most important villain in a number of methods. Whereas Batman is the most well-liked DC hero, crucial one, the chief of the remaining is Superman. In the event you’re going to be combating all the DC superhero group, like Darkseid does, you’re going to combat him lots. Nonetheless, that’s not the identical as calling Supes his reverse and supreme foe.
One of many issues about DC in recent times is that the corporate has established that Superman, being the primary superhero, is the being that powers the remainder of them with Hope, capital h. “Superman power” is what makes up the DC Multiverse. In the meantime, Darkseid has at all times been after the facility of Omega, the final word darkness, the tip of all issues and the other of hope. In a really possible way, Superman has been made into Darkseid’s reverse. They’re diametrically opposed to one another and DC is making it textual content within the DC Multiverse.
Darkseid Has Gotten Larger Than Ever and Can Have Extra Than One Nemesis
In the event you spend any time on-line in DC fan areas, a dialog that you just see lots is about Superman and Darkseid. Many DC followers are purists and so they need Darkseid to solely be a New Gods villain. Whereas they don’t have an issue with the general New Gods story taking heart stage in DC for a time, they don’t need the central narrative to vary – Darkseid vs. Orion, evil vs. good, the final word proof that evil is as a lot a selection as anything and we are able to all combat our worse natures. They’re a minority within the fandom, however they’ll get type of loud.
Nonetheless, the factor about it’s that Darkseid battling Superman is the very same story – it’s concerning the final evil battling somebody who might have grow to be the best conqueror the universe ever noticed, however selected to not. I get wanting to maintain one thing that Jack Kirby created unchanged; he’s the King in any case. Nonetheless, Darkseid saying Superman is his reverse quantity isn’t that. Orion remains to be Darkseid’s arch-nemesis and a personality that represents the other of the God of Evil. So is Superman. Darkseid is the God of Evil; he’s large enough to have two arch-enemies.
What do you consider Superman and Darkseid? Do you suppose that Supes ought to be Darkseid’s reverse quantity or ought to they preserve it Orion? Hold forth within the remark part under.
