“On the soccer facet, we had been very a lot aligned on what we believed in and what we really believed we might do with gamers. I believe we’ve got some comparable traits, regardless of being from totally different cultures.”

Corberan left for Valencia on Christmas Eve 2024 and Drury adopted inside a matter of days after being appointed as his assistant. A Championship play-off push was sacrificed for the problem of conserving Los Murcielagos in LaLiga.

They nearly had the proper begin, main Actual Madrid on the Mestalla till the eighty fifth minute on January 3 2025, when Luka Modric levelled and Jude Bellingham scored the 96th-minute winner.

“I keep in mind prepping for that recreation and considering this was the kind of atmosphere I needed to be in, to go up in opposition to gamers like Kylian Mbappe, Bellingham, Modric.

“To play them once more on the again finish of the season and win 2-1 – within the final minute, within the Bernabeu – was naturally the spotlight and the connection between us and the followers there was one thing so, so particular.

“We suffered in each of the video games in opposition to Barcelona, however to see the standard of participant at that degree within the flesh and to prep for these video games in opposition to a number of the greatest managers on the planet, the perfect gamers on the planet, on a weekly foundation, was one thing I beloved.”

“After we arrived, the membership had been all-time low of the league and to complete so near Europe by the tip of the season, having picked up some factors in opposition to giants was fairly particular.

‘Generally it’s a must to assess whether or not you are the one for a membership’

Drury was tempted again to the UK in July 2025, when he was appointed as one in all Keith Andrews’ assistant first-team coaches at Brentford.

However by early September, after simply three Premier League video games, he departed. “Martin has performed an vital position in setting us up for the season forward,” stated director of soccer Phil Giles.

“It is an incredible membership with sensible folks and I do not assume you are able to do something however respect what they do,” says Drury.

“They’re excellent from high to backside. Keith has executed an unbelievable job and I actually loved it there.

“Generally in soccer, you simply must assess whether or not it is the one for you and whether or not you are the best one for the membership.

“The conversations I had there have been actually open and sincere, however I take a look at them from afar and I am so pleased with how they went final season.

“I genuinely assume they’re going to be even stronger this season as a result of Keith is a high supervisor, they have a very good group of gamers and the membership is run impeccably nicely from high to backside.”

Going again to the place all of it started

The untimely departure from west London introduced an unplanned pause in Drury’s profession.

“I moved again up north to be near my household and it was the primary time in 12 years I might spent just a little little bit of time outdoors of soccer… which I completely despised!” he says, solely half-joking.

“I might not likely had a break for 10 to 12 years, so I jumped out of that hamster wheel and, once I look again, it was fairly productive when it comes to connecting with folks I might not seen for some time, going and seeing various things, difficult myself and my considering.

“I had a few alternatives to enter totally different golf equipment, however I stated no as a result of I felt I wanted just a little bit longer, then I used to be actually lucky to get a name from Liam Manning, who requested me to return into Huddersfield with him.

“I might recognized Liam a short while earlier than that and Huddersfield’s near my coronary heart, so I used to be wanting ahead to coming in and seeking to construct one thing particular.”

In January 2026, Drury was appointed assistant supervisor to Manning and, in late March, together with Jon Stead, he stepped as much as take cost when Manning was given compassionate depart.

An announcement from on the membership’s official web site stated: “Liam made the membership conscious of ongoing private issues referring to the tragic passing of his new child son Theo in October 2024”.

Drury’s everlasting appointment got here on Might 27. The membership stated he had established himself because the “excellent” candidate.

Regardless of his lack of prior want to be in cost in his personal proper, he was all in on the undertaking.

“I like teaching, I like being on the grass, I like working with gamers – however I am fairly pushed and once I actually consider in one thing, I can really feel very strongly about it.

“Behind my thoughts I assumed, in some unspecified time in the future, if I really feel so strongly a few sure method of working, a tradition and an atmosphere that I need to create, perhaps I used to be going to have to do that from the entrance. That wasn’t one thing I used to be concentrating on, however you possibly can by no means be too stunned in soccer.

“When the chance grew to become obvious, the choice was actually clear for me.

“When there was just a little little bit of turbulence in direction of the tip of the season, I by no means felt it was an actual difficult atmosphere to work in or troublesome folks to work with. I felt there have been lots of people who needed the perfect for the membership.

“The actual fact we have now had one window and we have been in a position to tackle some areas of the group we needed to try to strengthen, I believe the gamers who had been right here final season have in all probability appreciated the work that is gone on as a result of it is going to assist them.

“There’s some connection constructing within the group; that is going to take some extra time, because it all the time does if you usher in new gamers. Nevertheless it’s an actual humble group of males the place, every single day, the atmosphere is pushed by growth, with an actual profitable edge and a aggressive concentrate on it.”

Drury is aware of what he needs – he needs his group to epitomise the spirit of the north.

“Once I’m standing on the facet of the pitch, I need to see a group that represents Huddersfield. I need to see gamers operating and giving completely every thing,” he provides.
